​     Since 1993 my hands have been fascinated with clay, immersing them in this tactile substance creating whatever they wanted. Then I discovered a hiding place for many, the life mask.  What stories would emerge was anybody's guess. To embark on a journey with those who wanted to tell their story has been quite the adventure. I have created life masks of images taken from willing 4 year old's, feisty 98 years young, tribal sisters and all walks of life.  My work has led me to a deep and profound understanding of human nature. We can be intricately complex or beautifully simple in ways of viewing ourselves.      
      I have traveled "beyond the mask" with so many amazing people as they discover who they are "behind the mask."

Capturing the essence of the great oceans colorful creatures and living life forms is a favorite theme for a life mask. Let's face it, everyone loves a good Pirate's tale of mermaid encounters! 
And what would the world be without those colorful and vibrant "Dead Heads" who love their music and                  Jerry Garcia!!! And let's not forget John Mayer in the latter years!!!

 

My first sister mermaids!  Michelle lives in Southern California near the Pacific as does her sister Theresa, in the northern part of the state. A delightful treat to create for both of them.

Carnival images danced in Pamela's head inspiring her life mask adorned with Mardi Gras beads and a vintage doubloon caught by the Artist own hands.

Mr. Eternity!!! What a fabulously persistent patron. Adam approached me several years ago with this project. His childhood Marvel comic character was called "Eternity" and he wanted me to create a piece with his life mask as Eternity." Not my type of work," I told him. However, the pursuit would continue for 2 years and I finally gave in to push my limits. It is hand painted with underglazes, fired and complete with small galactic LED star lights in front and the back has a mode lighting that changes creating a spectacular light show on the wall. Whew!  I did it and loved creating it in the end. It was definitely a challenge!!! Thank you, Adam for your patience!!!!    He loved it!

Ed and Eve have it all. Incredible love story, world travel and dance follies together, wine country living, military service to our country, Global Philanthropic work and caring for children who needed much love. Mementos were given to me from each of them for placing on their sculptures. One puzzling piece challenged me . . .how on earth was I going to incorporate Eve's taps from her dancing shoes on the piece!!!

. . . And then there is this love story!
Alan came to me with a story so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. Separated for 3 decades, love brought them back together with a simple phone call and now they are living happily ever after. REALLY, a true to life love story!!! He wanted to capture her beauty in this sculpture. I could only capture her stunning essence as nothing could be more beautiful than Carol in reality. She is one of the sweetest Southern Magnolias I've ever met. I should know, I'm from the South.

And let's not forget the faeries that roam about in the gardens. Flowers, feathers and jewels adorn this little sprite! Even her little nose is fashion after her magical friends.
