Sgraffito
The origins of sgraffito are traced to the Italian renaissance where it played a significant role in its use on the exterior of buildings and palace facades. After its introduction in Southern Europe, Sgraffito made its way into art and architecture during the Northern Renaissance. In clay works, it is a form of decoration made by scratching through a glazed surface to reveal the design carved in it and the clay body underneath. I fell in love with the process at first sight and launched into a whole lot of scratching with passion!
When available before or after show season, the pieces may be listed on Etsy. Otherwise, you can see the collections at schedule shows and festivals listed here on the Events Page. If you see a design or piece you like please contact me for commission requests or to check to see if it is in stock here.
Also, a new option for shopping can be a virtual appointment via facetime. Schedule an appointment and we can take a spin around the studio and view created works and new ones in process that can be purchased or commissioned.

I never tire of the garden and its uncanny way of drawing me in to discover what's underneath all those flowers that I love to scratch out in the designs on so many platters. I am surprised at the under worlds that dance where the bees venture at times. I wonder!!!!

Inspiration
I live on a property rich with owls, raccoons and nature galore! The Pacific ocean is just a 30 minute drive away. So a bit of whimsey tends to be captured throughout the different seasons.
The Process
The pieces are painted over with a black slip. I draw out a design and proceed to scratch away to reveal that design and the white clay body. The rabbit and mouse are in a leather hard state for carving.
Color will be added or not, then cleared glazed and fired.
